Pycnanthemum hyssopifolium – This may be P. flexuosum, the Appalachian Mountain Mint. Small, soft lanceolate bright green leaves create a fine texture. Crush the foliage and you will be treated to a heady aroma approaching that of crème de menthe. Small white flowers in great numbers on branched stems adorn the foliage in mid to late summer. Though from the distance the July flowers appear pure white upon close inspection the white is suffused with the palest pastel lilac. It is barely noticeable but lovely. Appalachian Mountain Mint will gradually form a very nice, dense but graceful ground cover. Site in full sun in any decent garden soil. Once established it is quite drought tolerant. This neat perennial came our way via Jonathan Lehrer. If ordered in our autumn catalog it will arrive cut back, likely. Division or cutting grown.
