Lychnis cognata - ​This rarely offered perennial campion produces numberous soft melon-orange flowers beginning late spring or early summer. The stems tend towards decumbency and, therefore, this unusual catchfly is best used when allowed to wend through other perennials leaning upon them for a bit of support. The foliage is inconsequential but when it flowers... well, customers who are unfamiliar with this plant "ooh" and "ahh" when they espy it in the context of the garden. We have several plants in a border where they bloom with white Lychnis coronaria plus daylilies in warm shades of peach, soft orange, yellow and gold; Lychnis cognata fills in the lower tier of this garden and pulls together the other colors in the underscoring. And unlike L. coronaria, this beauty has not self-sown - it's very well-behaved. Site in part to full sun planted in any decent well-drained garden soil. Our original plant came from Dan Hinkley's Heronswood Nursery. This is a clumping perennial. So come on you orange lovers... we know you're there - out of the closet and into the gardens.
