Lonicera maximowiczii var. sachalinensis
Sakhalin Honeysuckle
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSLonicera maximowiczii var. sachalinensis – The Sakhalin Honeysuckle is a handsome if not downright beautiful underutilized shrub that will make a good element in a wildlife planting or shrub border, a barrier hedge, screen or background to other shrubs and perennials. Dark red honeysuckle flowers in May become red berries later in the circadian calender. New leaves flush purple, expand, bronze and finally mature medium to dark semi-glossy green. The overall form is a rounded mounding shrub cloaked in clean-looking foliage all season on purple-brown stems. The Sakhalin Honeysuckle may also pick up very good yellow tones in the autumn. It has never set seed here and is not considered “invasive” in Connecticut. Site in full to half sun in almost any draining even alkaline soil; of course, a happier plant will be had if planted in better conditions. If purchased in our Autumn shipping window your Sakhalin Honeysuckle will be pruned with next year's performance in mind. Cutting grown.
