Lonicera crassifolia

Honeysuckle

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Lonicera crassifolia (ex: Maria Galletti) This is a most beautiful small-growing Honeysuckle species with gorgeous glossy round and heavily textured rich green leaves (geez, Wayne, enough descriptive words??) forming a thickened, virtually evergreen prostrate mat (there you go again). The foliage may pick up dark burgundy tones when the temperatures plummet. From white buds with a dark pink to red-pink base relatively large clustered white flowers aging to creamy yellow emerge in typical honeysuckle shape. The lovely flowers on this very clean looking plant if pollinated will form blue berries which will stud the foliage late season. Fitting nicely into a heath, a rockery or at the front of the border it is a delightful little shrub. Calm down! Oh! And you could even plant it in a trough with occasional pruning here and there. It is highly doubtful that this will be “invasive”. Geez! Just because a species or two in a particular genus has a bad rap in a certain area of the world doesn't mean all the multitudes of cousins in that genus can be simply dismissed as being "problem plants" or "thugs". Site in full to part sun planted in fertile soil for best results. This is a clumping shrublet with trailing stems and moderate spread.
