Alnus glutinosa ‘Imperialis’ – is a deeply cut-leaf form of Black Alder with deeper grooves than A. g. ‘Laciniata’. Growing quickly in youth, 2’ to 2.5’ per year in an upright oval, it eventually slows down and becomes more rounded. Alnus glutinosa ‘Imperialis’ enjoys constantly moist soils but is adaptable to drier conditions. Michael Dirr says, “quite wispy, elegant and is refined, seems to improve with age.” Ours is beautiful and with a bark not unlike Zelkova serrata. Cutting grown.
