Podophyllum x 'Red Panda' - Hybrid Mayapple from Quackin Grass Nursery

Podophyllum x 'Red Panda' - New leaves are bronze-red with a satin sheen on this Podophyllum delavayi and P. pleianthum hybrid. The bold, peltate leaves gradually become infused with increasing green-bronze while still retaining an overall red-bronze blush. Dark red spring flowers are an opulent joy. This rare Mayapple is a gradual colonizer increasing its spread in the garden slowly, an anathema to the rampant tendencies of our native Podophyllum peltatum. Please note: though 'Red Panda' is a seed-grown strain this selection was selected as a superior clone by knowledgeable gardeners; in that, this rare hybrid as of 2019 is among the best seen with the best color. To insure that your plant will maintain these traits we produce our offerings from division and not seed. This will make one heck-of-a specimen in contrast with Epimedium, ferns, Vancouveria and gingers - smaller and softer foliage underscoring the foliage of 'Red Panda' which "bold and the beautiful" (not the soap which we have dubbed "the bilge and the boring" which on weekday afternoons follows the "dumb and the feckless".) Fertile, moist soil on the acid side of the Ph spectrum in dappled to open shade though early to mid-morning sun is certainly tolerable.
