Podophyllum peltatum 'Dappled Running Raccoon'

Dappled Mayapple

Plant Type:

SHADE PERENNIALS

Podophyllum peltatum 'Dappled Running Raccoon' - The new foliage on this form is handsomely mottled. It is the mottling that makes the distinct difference in this selection of our native Mayapple which is usually solid green. Podophyllum peltatum makes large bowl-shaped pristine white flowers with central yellow sexual parts. Flowers may reach two inches diameter. These occur on short pedicels which erupt from where the two bold peltate leaves meet at the crotch of the main stem. We believe 'Dappled Running Raccoon' was stumbled upon and selected in Virginia. Pale ivory-yellow egg-shaped mayapples set up thereafter growing between 2 and 3 inches long. Interesting on the plant and becoming increasing noticeable as the foliage dies back, they can also be harvested and made into a very nice jelly. As with other early blooming woodland plants Podophyllum peltatum 'Dappled Running Raccoon' dies down to dormancy by middle to middle-late summer. A quick growing naturalizer, Mayapple is perfect at the edge of the woodland, on a slope, before a stone wall planted above daffodil bulbs or wherever a torridly quick ground covering perennial is desired. But don't place it with other perennials that might be swamped by the tsunami force that this fierce grower is. And consider bigger plants with long season (and better: multiple season) interest as companions such as shrubs. Also, any rugged perennial that enjoys the same condition that will begin to have its season as Mayapple dies back is a good candidate. Plant in fertile woodland conditions sited in morning sun, dappled to open shade. Mayapple is an Eastern North American native. Established potted Mayapple grown from division.
