Pterostyrax hispidus
Fragrant Epaulette Tree
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSPterostyrax hispidus (aka P. hispida) – Fragrant Epaulette Tree or Wisteria Tree. Large multi-stemmed shrub or can be trained into a single stem tree. Showy creamy white epaulette-like flowers hang in profusion in late spring. Full sun in fertile, draining soil. Though the 15 to 20 feet height is indicated this shrub is variable and can grow larger. This, too, can be trained into a small tree if that is your desire. Our shrub is now about 10 feet tall, a big round ball that flowers annually. Based upon anecdotal experience with both P. hispidus and corymbosus it appears that hispidus is the hardier of the two. Cutting grown.
