Roscoea purpurea 'Brown Peacock' - A large-flowered form with terminal pinkish purple flowers. The lower lip of each flower is large and papery. The flame-shaped hood jutting vertically above it encompasses the sexual parts. The June - July perhaps into August flowers of 'Brown Peacock' are orchid-like but this is actually a fascinating member of Zingiberaceae, the ginger family. These emerge above alternating, simple lance-shaped blades of moderately heavy texture with gentle, broad undulation. The entirety of leaves are flushed with mahogany-purple. Leaf undersides are flushed with dark, rich brown-purple and retain more of the shading. But the brunneous color is evident on all parts of leaves for the whole of the growing season. And the leaves are sessile with leaf bases wrapping around the main purple stalks locking in a strong connection. 'Brown Peacock' was selected in Holland. Shade to early morning sun or dappled light in fertile, organic soil. Plant sheltered in the north. For gardeners towards the northern end of its range spring planting is advised. Suitable for a special spot on the woodland floor or even in the rock garden. Established pot grown division.
