Acer palmatum 'Beni Schischihenge'
Japanese Maple
Plant Type:
TREESAcer palmatum 'Beni Schischihenge' (alt. spelling 'Beni Shishihenge') - 'Beni Schischihenge' essentially translates to red and changeable, originally came to us from Environmentals Nursery. And though Environmentals was usually accurate with tagging we are not convinced that it was properly named. The reasons are that this cultivar has no or nearly no white with the green and curious tan-orange colored sections of leaf and lobe with no red evident. Lobes appear to be perhaps slightly broader than those of 'Beni Schischihenge. Also, it forms a striking, upright small tree compared to the description of 'Beni Schischihenge' which develops into a more shrub-like plant between 6 and 7 feet. Our tree is already taller than that determination. The color of each leaf with variable patches of the interesting tan-orange can occur in greater or lesser degree replacing the green tissue. Some leaves exhibit little green. We are indicating an 8 to 10 foot tall determination for this upright tree with the rounded crown but it may eventually grow taller - but never huge as it is, after all, a Japanese Maple. This tree is striking, unusual and will form a beautiful small specimen and affords many uses in combination with other trees and shrubs. Of course, it would be spectacular in a Japanese style garden. It also is sun tolerant though I wouldn't place it in full, blazing afternoon sun in the southern end of its range... but you experienced guys and gals down south know better than me! Organic, moisture-retentive soils for good performance. Nice small trees in full 2-quart squares are not grafted.

Genus Overview: Acer
So many maples, so little time! There are an extraordinary number of very good species in Aceraceae, many of smaller stature that fit well in smaller landscapes and gardens of any size. Most have multi-season appeal and, indeed, these are the ones to which we at Quackin’ Grass Nursery gravitate. Most are content in fertile draining soils sited in full sun. Others are happier in the part sun conditions akin to the understory stature as suggested by their size. Through the years we have found that many maples when planted in the far northern end of the USDA hardiness range respond well to protection during at least their first winter - preferably more - in the landscape, i.e. use tall stakes set firmly in the ground with burlap attached completely barricading the tree. All of our maple offerings are cutting grown; these plants are not grafted.
