Bergenia ciliata 'Wilton' (aka 'Dixter Form') – A stunning, bold perennial. The Hairy Bergenia... the name almost makes one feel itchy - but keep reading (!!)... will produce barely pink flowers which darken with age unless petioles are whacked by a spring frost. The attractive florets cluster atop thick stalks just as the foliage begins to emerge. This is where it gets really good: leaves emerge, expand and can grow to the size of a dinner plate, 12 inches diameter. Huge, bold and semi-glossy dark green leaves provide extraordinary textural contrast to finer and more delicate garden companions. At the end of the growing season leaves often pick up a beautiful red infusion just in time for the gardens' autumn festivities. Even more alluring is the fact that the leaves can remain semi-evergreen at the warmer end of the growing range. The well-behaved Bergenia is clumping. Fertile, friable soil in part sun – probably best in afternoon shade although dappled would suit 'Wilton' as well. Should be seen with greater frequency in American gardens. C'mon, people!
