Spotted Bee Balm

Plant Type:

SUN PERENNIALS

Monarda punctata – Spotted Beebalm or Spotted Horsemint though widespread in native distribution is not often found in gardens. It's an interesting plant in flower each off-white, green and pink set of bracts circling circling and subtending the sexual parts in tiers up and down all flowering stems. It can bloom for many weeks and is a good wildlife plant. Amerindians used the leaves for a weak tea which doubles as a balm to ease backache; additionally Spotted Beebalm has been used medicinally to treat flu, colds and fever. If looking at a map of North America Monarda punctata wild populations can be found in all states from Florida west to New Mexico, following a diagonal line from New Mexico in a northeasterly direction right up through all of the east-central and eastern provinces of Canada; populations also occur in parts of California.
