Hieracium pilosella (form. Pilosella officinarum​) - ​Light yellow dandelion-like flowers occur over a long period in late spring and summer above a flat mat of very bright silver-gray leaves. Flower color is a true light, bright yellow, not gold. Flower stems grow from 8 to 12 inches tall but the foliage follows the lay of the land growing at most to 2 inches high. Mouse-ear Hawkweed is perfect in the rock or xeric garden planted in full, blazing sun in modest to impoverished scrabbled soil. It will attempt to ground cover. The bright silver color of its attractive leaves is a standout. Mouse-ear Hawkweed is undemanding and useful. Uncommonly offered, this came our way from Leo Blanchette. (We are testing its endurance in USDA zone 5... considering its origins we think it might “do” for us. Update: it has come through 2 very long and cold winters with the colony not only surviving but thriving as it gradually covers more ground.) Pot-grown from division.
