Dispacus fullonum
Teasel
Plant Type:
BIENNIALDispacus fullonum (D. sylvestris?) – Teasel. Beautiful biennial with large, showy thistle-like heads which remain on the strong, fibrous stalks right through the winter here. Small, lavender-pink flowers emerge in broad bands as the flower heads mature. After the flowering structure dries these can be cut and used in dried autumn arrangements or for rustic Christmas decorations. Though biennial this plant will self sow where content providing you with an annual supply of garden interest and cut, spent seed heads should that be your bent. Gold Finches love these plants. Spiny tongues of leaves make a coarse rosette on the ground with some leaves obliquely ascendent, the entire structure reminding me of the scrambler ride at the county fair... of course, I have on occasion been accused of harboring a too-active imagination. Nice addition to the full sun to part shade perennial garden, cutting garden, meadow or what and wherever the desires of your rustic heart may be. Seed grown.
